Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and singer. Queen Latifah, the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was born and raised in Newark New Jersey. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was born and brought up in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah refers to an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". The cousin she had bestowed it on her at the age of eight. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. In a school production, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an example of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah in the early days and was awed by the single. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
